Frequently asked questions about the Beekman Library
|
How does one get a library card? Any Beekman resident may obtain a card by bringing identification of residence to the library and registering for a borrower's card. Unionvale residents may also obtain a Beekman card since their town does not have a library. Where can the card be used? In any one of the 70 libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System which are located in Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, Orange and Greene counties. How does the library obtain funding? Beekman Library receives about 70% of its funding from the town of Beekman. It also receives small amounts from Dutchess County and Mid-Hudson Library System. The balance is raised by fund raising efforts of the Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Beekman Library. What are these fund raising events? The Board sends out an annual appeal letter for donations. The Friends hold periodic book sales and other events at which books and crafts are sold. In addition, they hold a holiday sale and silent auction each December. Who are the people who comprise the Board and what do they do? The Board is a group of citizens from all backgrounds who have a deep and abiding love for the library and who place its interests above all others. Their function is to govern the policies of the library, watch over its finances and see to it that Beekman Library fulfills its Mission Statement. Where does the library get the books for the book sales? Books are donated by the public. Those that are deemed useful for the collection will be cataloged. The rest are put aside until the next sale. Donors must call before dropping off books to be sure we have room to store them. We do not accept condensed books, text books, encyclopedias before 1993 and materials which have water or mildew damage. Are donations to the library tax exempt? Beekman Library is a non profit 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax exempt and gratefully accepted. |
